The origin of this significant and timely book was a lecture on the structural changes in the international oll industry prepared by Dr. AI-Chalabi for the OAPEC annual course on the Fundamentals o[ Oil and Gas. It was given in Arabic in February 1978 when the author was Assistant Secretary General of OAPEC. The author has succeeded in ex panding and updating the basic aspects of the subject. He has managed, in this relatively short book, to survey and analyse the main structural changes in the inter national oll industry during the last 35 years, with special emphasis on the revolutionary changes of the 1970s. The book clearly demonstrates the significance of these changes in terms of their impact on the power of control and decisions concerning the ownership of oil resources, their marketing outlets and price policy. It explains how the concession system and the various consortia arrangements among the transnational oil companies gave them max imum freedom and flexibility in the control and manage ment of emde oil production and pricing. Their vertical and horizontal integration enabled them to control and manage upstream and downstream operations on a global basis and with the effectiveness of a powerful international Cartel.

A single pair of antennae (homologous with the anten nules of the Crustacea) is present and the head also bears a pair of mandibles and two pairs of maxillae, the second pair fused medially to form the labium. The thorax carries three pairs of legs and usually one or two pairs of wings. The abdomen is devoid of ambulatory appendages, and the genital opening is situated near the posterior end of the body. Postembryonic development is rarely direct and a metamorphosis usually occurs.

This monograph has its origins in a two-day meeting with the same title held in London, England in the spring of 1987. The idea for the meeting came from members of the UK Mineral and Rock Physics Group. It was held under the auspices of, and made possible by the generous support of, the Mineralogical Society of Great Britain and Ireland. Additional financial assistance was provided by ECC International pIc and the Cookson Group pIc. The aims of the London meeting were to survey the current state of knowledge about deformation processes in non-metallic materials and to bring together both experts and less experienced Earth scientists and ceramicists who normally had little contact but shared common interests in deformation mechanisms. This monograph has similar aims and, indeed, most of its authors were keynote speakers at the meeting. Consequently, most of the contributions contain a review element in addition to the presentation and discussion of new results. In adopting this format, the editors hope that the monograph will provide a valuable state-of-the-art sourcebook, both to active researchers and also to graduate students just starting in the relevant fields.

Deep Marine Environments: Clastic sedimentation and tectonics

This is a description of deep-marine sedimentary environments which aims to summarize the information that has been acquired since 1970, particularly as a result of international oceangraphic research through the Ocean Drilling Programme. The text integrates detailed process-based sedimentology, depositional environments and large-scale plate-tectonic controls of deep-marine sediments from both modern and ancient settings. The work is divided into three parts. The first part provides a physical basis for transport and deposition of sediments in the deep oceans, followed by a facies classification scheme with examples and a survey of the main controls on deep-sea sedimentation. The second part is devoted to discussions of the main depositional systems in which siliciclastic sediments accumulate in the oceans, illustrated by both modern and ancient case studies to show the range of variability within depositional systems. The final part focuses on deep-marine sediments at passive, convergent and oblique-slip continental margins and plate boundaries, again illustrated with case studies based in part on DSDP results and marine seismic reflection profiles.
